▸ HOW TO PLAY

New here? Try our interactive tutorial and learn how everything works, step by step, on a real box.

Boxes

Pick a difficulty from the BOXES tab -- EASY, MEDIUM, HARD, or HARD -- CHAINED (a two-machine scenario) -- and a fresh target generates on the spot. Its IP appears once loaded.

  • Recon: nmap -sV <ip> -- check every service before picking a target
  • Foothold: hydra for weak/default creds, or dirbuster to find a hidden endpoint leaking something to crack offline -- both need a wordlist, already sitting in ~/wordlists/ on ghost (type wordlists to see exact filenames/paths)
  • Enumerate for a second user's credential: home directories, shell history, leftover config files
  • Found a password hash? hashcat -m 0 <hash file> <wordlist> cracks it -- works whether you run it on the target or copy the hash to your own machine first, just like real offline cracking
  • Log in as that user: while connected to the box the hash came from, su <user> alone picks up the cracked password automatically -- no need to type it
  • Find the local privesc vector: find / -perm -4000 for SUID binaries, sudo -l for sudo misconfig
  • Capture each flag with cat -- progress shows on the FLAGS tab
  • Before you go: rm/shred /var/log/auth.log covers your tracks (bonus, never required)
  • Hard -- Chained: rooting the first machine reveals a second, harder one reachable from what you found there -- a real day-of-exam pivot, not two unrelated boxes
  • Fastest clean run per tier makes the LEADERBOARD

Open World

Separate from the mission boxes: every player (and a scattering of NPCs) has their own persistent server out in a shared address space. Other real players can find and attack yours, and you can find and attack theirs.

  • myserver checks your own machine -- services, versions, open ports, and anyone who's compromised you recently
  • patch <service> fixes a vulnerable service; ufw allow|deny <port> opens or closes a port entirely -- nobody does this for you, and it starts with one real vulnerability already sitting on it
  • Finding other players/NPCs: nmap -sV <ip> a specific address, or sweep a whole range at once with nmap -sn <cidr>
  • NPCs live around 10.50.0.0/24, real players around 10.50.1.0/24 -- most addresses in either range are genuinely empty, so sweep and see what turns up rather than expecting every IP to answer
  • Once you find a live target, it's the same playbook as a mission box: recon, foothold (hydra or a real exploit), get in
  • Your own machine's login is a real, player-chosen password -- separate from your account password, set the first time you play and changeable anytime in-terminal with passwd
  • Two things reveal a target's username to hydra: the hostname (<username>-srv, visible via nmap) and the public LEADERBOARD/profile pages -- both point at the same real login, so a weak box password is a genuine, discoverable risk
  • Repeated failed hydra guesses against the same target eventually start silently failing for a while, like a real fail2ban ban -- brute-forcing isn't free
  • A successful compromise is permanent and public -- it posts to the "Most Systems Compromised" leaderboard, and the player you hit gets notified next time they're active
  • Defense counts too: the "Most Resilient" leaderboard ranks currently-secure accounts first, then fewest times compromised -- an unpatched box you forgot about is free points for someone else
  • Any player's public record (mission completions, offense/defense stats) is visible on their profile -- click a username on the LEADERBOARD tab, or open /profile?user=<name>

Quick reference

  • help lists every command; help <command> shows details and an example
  • Tab completes commands and file paths
  • The REFERENCE tab in the sidebar has the same command list, always available
  • Open more terminal tabs (+ , top of the terminal) to work multiple machines at once -- e.g. one tab on your own server, another still connected to a box you've rooted. Each tab keeps its own connection independently
▸ WHAT'S NEW
  • We're on Discord now. A place to swap tips, show off a clean run, or just hang out -- link's in the topbar's FEEDBACK menu and the footer any time.

Earlier updates

  • Story Mode is complete -- Chapters 4 and 5 are live. The investigation wraps up: Chapter 4 ("The Program") and Chapter 5 ("Point of No Return"), both VulnBox Pro. Five chapters now, start to finish -- find them all from the STORY MODE button in the BOXES tab.
  • Our subreddit is down. Reddit removed it, saying we'd been promoting the service in other subreddits in a way that broke their rules. We're disputing the takedown now -- if you followed us there, hang tight.
  • Invite friends, earn free Pro. Every account now has a referral link -- find yours on your profile page. Get 3 friends to sign up and capture their first flag, and you earn a free month of VulnBox Pro. Keeps stacking every 3 more.
  • Leaderboard, rebuilt. Real rank badges and highlighting for the top 3 instead of a plain numbered list, plus a live top-players widget now on the front page for anyone checking things out before they sign up.
  • Your first win now shares itself. Finish your very first box and we make you a share badge automatically instead of waiting for a click -- still fully optional, remove it any time right there in the popup.
  • Now mobile friendly. VulnBox Arena works on your phone and tablet: a layout built for small screens (switch between TERMINAL and BOXES & FLAGS at the bottom), a menu for the topbar, and a key bar with TAB, the arrow keys and the symbols phone keyboards hide.
  • A friendlier guided tour. It now asks before it starts, sits above the terminal instead of covering it, and every step has a RUN button that types and runs the command for you -- no typing or pasting. It only moves on once a step has actually worked, helps you recover if you mistype or leave the box, and accepts /bin/bash as well as /bin/sh for the final privilege-escalation step. Fixed: Tutorials 2-4 could get stuck at their first flag, ssh could reuse a stale password from the previous box, and loading a different box in the middle of a tutorial left every step failing (it now offers a one-tap way back).
  • Share your wins. Finish a box and you can make a shareable badge -- your tier, time and (if you want it) your username -- with one-click sharing to X, Facebook, Reddit and LinkedIn. It's completely optional, and you can remove a badge any time.
  • Story Mode now has its own home. One STORY MODE button in the BOXES tab opens a full-screen intro that types out the premise, then lets you pick your chapter. Skip the intro any time.
  • Story Mode continues -- Chapters 2 and 3 are live. Chapter 1 ("First Contact") is still free for everyone. The investigation keeps going in Chapter 2 ("Chain of Custody") and Chapter 3 ("The Buyer"), available now with VulnBox Pro -- find both in the BOXES tab.
  • Tutorial expanded to 4 modules. Beyond the original box, walk through finding hidden admin panels with dirbuster, a real searchsploit-found exploit, and two different sudo-misconfiguration privesc techniques. Click the small arrow next to TUTORIAL in the topbar to jump straight to any module.
  • You can change your password from your profile page now -- no need to contact support.
  • LESSONS tab. Short, plain-language walkthroughs of every tool -- what it's for and why -- plus a dedicated lesson on getting to root (GTFOBins, sudo -l, SUID binaries). Find it in the topbar any time you want a refresher.
  • Leaderboard is live -- see how you rank by boxes completed and average time, per difficulty.
  • wordlists command -- run it on your own machine to see exactly where your wordlists are and what's in them. Also in your readme.txt and the welcome message now.
  • Fixed VulnBox Pro checkout -- upgrading was broken, now works correctly.

Coming soon

Open World -- in the next month or so.

Real technique: a target's SPF/DMARC posture -- recon it with dig TXT <domain> and dig TXT _dmarc.<domain> from the terminal -- decides whether a spoofed From: domain gets flagged as external. Subject/body wording doesn't matter here; what matters is whether the recipient is real and the sender domain would actually pass.
